Business Coaching for Tradies
Tradies are often excellent at what they do, which means they may spend their whole time working in the business rather than on the business. This is why business coaching is essential process for tradies looking for growth and success.
If you’re a tradie considering business coaching to help you in growing your trades business, here are seven questions that need answering yourself to determine whether you’re ready.
Do you spend upwards of 80% of your time on tools? If you’re genuine about growing your business, you’re going to need to invest more time to work ‘on’ it. You’ll need time to create an action plan and then implement the techniques necessary to make your objectives a reality. At a minimum 20% of your time should be spent ‘on’ the business. Is your trading business entirely dependent on you? If your business is entirely reliant on you performing all tasks, you will never be able to take a break or step away from the tools without compromising your revenue. You’ll need to put together a team and create strategies and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to ensure their success.
Are you constantly pressed for time to finish things on your that are important to you? Nobody loves quoting and invoicing late at night. Working long hours will have an effect on your productivity and, more importantly, on your relationships. If you’re finding that you’re unable to complete tasks within typical business hours, you need to improve your efficiency and that of your firm. Do you have a strategy? You would never get in your car and then pick where to go; you would always choose a destination first. Your business is not an exception. You should be aware of your destination. Your plan must include sales and profitability targets, as well as a strategy for achieving them.
Are you profitable? Self-employment can be challenging, and many of the Tradies we encounter are busy, but not making the money they should. It’s pointless to break your back working really hard if all you earn is an average salary. Running a business involves risks and challenges, and your business should compensate you appropriately for accepting these risks. Do you have a solid team you can put your trust in and depend on? Only by recruiting the right people will you be able to develop a successful trades firm. If you lack confidence in your team, it will be difficult to distribute duties confidently. You’ll need to learn and understand what it takes to recruit and hire exceptional tradies and team members.
Are you happy? Your business is a significant part of your life, and it’s essential that you love operating it. If you wake up each morning dreading the prospect of having to ‘go to work,’ it is time to make a change. As the old agage goes….nothing changes unless something changes.
